Lower Back Pain

5 min read · General education

Overview

Back pain is very common and usually improves within a few weeks or months. It is often caused by posture, lifting, or minor strain rather than a serious problem.

Common symptoms

  • Aching or stiffness in the lower back
  • Pain that worsens with certain movements
  • Muscle spasms

Possible causes and risk factors

  • Poor posture or long periods of sitting
  • Lifting heavy objects incorrectly
  • Low activity
  • Being overweight

Prevention and healthy lifestyle

  • Stay active and keep moving gently
  • Lift with bent knees and a straight back
  • Take breaks from long sitting
  • Strengthen core and leg muscles

Nutrition and exercise considerations

  • Walking and gentle mobility work are usually helpful
  • Avoid long bed rest

When to consult a healthcare professional

  • Pain not improving after a few weeks
  • Pain stopping daily activities
  • Pain with numbness or tingling in the legs

Emergency warning signs

  • • Numbness around the genitals or bottom, loss of bladder or bowel control, or weakness in both legs — go to emergency immediately
  • • Back pain with fever or after a serious fall

In Pakistan, call Rescue 1122 or 115 (Edhi) in an emergency.
